So I know we've been on "pause" for a ridiculously long time now. Who knew it would be so tough to find a few free minutes to write about my distrust of the Disney princess brand and some thoughts on feminism?
But in the meantime, want to hear a story? My bridesmaid outfit went out the window ... literally.
I'm flying out for the wedding today. My mother-in-law made me a beautiful jacket to match the ones the other bridesmaids are wearing. We all used the same pattern, fabric, etc. in an effort to reduce the stress of people shopping for people they've never met across country and maximize the possibility of matching. Anyway, last night I got home and went to get the jacket out of the car. The hanger was right where I'd hung it. The jacket was not. The explanation? We think at some point the window was rolled down and it went flying out.
There were many tears, a lot of phone calls, and a very understanding bride and patient mother-in-law.
Somewhere in Utah a beautiful jacket in the color of "marine" is blowing around in the wind. Maybe another bridal party can put it to use?

So do we get to hear about Disney Princesses? I think its funny how they can be pretty heavy handed about pretending NOT to be promoting a sexist view (look! Belle likes reading! Tiana likes owning her own business! Mulan kills people!) and yet they all having it going on in the usual way -- though Belle is "so peculiar" she still has a "fair facade" and is "a beauty but a funny girl" -- you can afford to be odd if you're freaking hot. Also, in the end they always find fulfillment in a guy and because of the necessary prince trope it is usually a guy who outranks her. Cinderella and Snow White got their princes. Aurora got her prince though she initially seemed like a peasant but was in fact his equal and didn't know it. Tiana married a worthless spendthrift who was better off as a frog. Belle the peasant married a prince. Mulan the peasant married a prince AND her commanding officer. Jasmine did marry her inferior, but given the restrictions on her movements she still got to enjoy a subordinate position. Ah well.
Yes! Life just kind of exploded since I got back from DC and so I'm a horrible blog-slacker at the moment. But so many links are coming your way you should prepare for carpal tunnel. =) And thanks for the awesome insights into the hypocrisy of it all. I hadn't considered that angle of it -- that they've made surface efforts to cover it up. I especially liked "You can afford to be odd if you're freaking hot."
Oh wow that really sucks. But it will make a funny story for you and the Bride to tell one day. :-)
